Non-Objective Mixed-Media Paintings

Abstract and Non-Representational Paintings.

In abstract painting my attention is on surface and how surface effects can take the eye deeper into the painting. Layering is the secret to achieving a painting you don't tire of or eventually overlook entirely.

This painting is a good example of what I hope to achieve working abstract. It has all my favorite elements: surface interest, delineated organization and complimentary colors.

This painting is a bit of a departure for me. I used this for a digital collage for some cover art that I was asked to do.

Abstract Digital Collage

Here is the digital collage I mentioned. I used my painting, "Zero Degrees" as the base and overlayed it with the image of the violin player.

This large painting is another one of my favorites. I like its simplicity, as well as the heavily textured surface. I painted this for a gallery exhibition with the theme of Contemporary Botanicals.

Opposite: "Divine Disorder" 50" x 50" Acrylic on Canvas.  Sold

This painting really explores complex surface treatment. The effect is achieved with a put-on, take-off technique...laborious if painted large-scale (and on the floor) but this painting is only 28" x 22" and was fun to do. Sold

My abstract paintings are usually very organized. For me, the trick is to achieve the orderliness I like without sacrificing nuance and happy unintended marks that make any painting more interesting. This is especially true with representational work. In abstract painting these happy marks are mostly part of the process and have a life of their own. Magic!

Opposite: "Inversion" 36" x 36" Acrylic and Pencil on Canvas.

This painting has more independent elements than I generally do. But I could see early-on that it was going to work. Just took a little pencil work and voila.

Here's a little painting that's all about the movement of paint. One of my favorites.

Opposite: "Before the Fall" 10" x 8" Acrylic on Canvas.

This little painting is all about surface and a love affair with paint.

Opposite: "Little Abstract in Neutrals" 8" x 8" Acrylic on Canvas

This painting was one of my earliest forays into abstract painting and still one of my favorites.
